Tummy Tuck
Description: To remove excess skin and fat, and improve the abdominal contours and scars as well as tightening the abdominal muscles. Abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ includes a range of procedures tailored to individual needs, and include the standard abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty, extended or full abdominoplasty, endoscopic abdominoplasty, and apronectomy. Liposuction can also be used during these procedures, and should also be considered as an alternative procedure on its own. This reduces fat and causes a little retraction on of the skin.
Potential Risk of Negligence: Abdominoplasty has the potential to cause serious and even life threatening complications and should only be performed in a well-equipped hospital with highly trained staff. There are general risks associated with major surgery and a general anaesthetic including a small risk of chest infection particularly if you smoke, and also a small risk of deep vein thrombosis in the leg, or pulmonary blood clot, particularly if you are taking the contraceptive pill.
There are several well recognised complications of this surgery including: bleeding, swelling and bruising, raised red scars which may be unsightly or even painful, numbness of the skin of the lower abdomen, wound infections and delayed healing, and seroma formation. The latter is a collection of fluid between the muscles and the soft tissue that may need drainage with a syringe and needle several times. Wound infections are usually minor but they can delay healing. Rarely wound infections can be more serious requiring prompt treatment to prevent tissue damage and the spread of infection. Although rare, more serious complications can occur and these can be increased if you have obesity, diabetes, and a history of a clotting disorder. Very rarely complications occur if the internal organs are damaged during the procedure. This can happen if the liposuction cannula penetrates the abdominal cavity, and organs are damaged. This requires prompt attention and treatment to avoid serious illness or even death. Displacement of the umbilicus is a rare complication.
Secondary procedures are sometimes carried out to tidy up the results and involve scar revision and limited liposuction.
