Botulinum Toxin
Description:To reduce wrinkles on the face and neck arising from muscle contraction, and to produce a smoother, unlined, and fresher more youthful appearance. It is a 'non-surgical' cosmetic procedure. The word 'Botox' is a company trade name for a product containing botulinum toxin, which is derived from a bacteria. The amount of toxin used is too small to cause any clinical disease. As well as Botox, there are three other authorised products: Dysport, Neurobloc and Vistabel. Botox can also be used to reduce excessive sweating of the armpits and palms of the hands, and for abolishing facial 'tics'.
Potential Risk of Negligence: The treatment involves administering the Botox by injections with micro-needles. Some redness or swelling may appear initially which will wear off after a few hours. The effects of treatment will last approximately 4 – 6 months, it is not permanent. Complications are rare and usually minor in nature. When injecting above the eyebrows, a 'drooping' eyelid can occur, this can be corrected with eye drops and will improve as the effects of the Botox wears off. Occasionally Botox may cause the eyebrows to be raised excessively, resulting in a 'surprised' and unnatural appearance, this can be corrected with more Botox used to weaken the muscles that lift the brow. Very rarely excessive weakening of the muscles can occur. Botox should not be used for anyone with a neuromuscular or neurological disorder.
