Breast Reduction (male)
Description:Breast tissue can in certain circumstances develop in men; this is known as 'gynaecomastia'. This condition can be very distressing for men and there are several types of operation available to treat this condition: including liposuction of fatty tissue or excision (cutting out) of glandular tissue. The latter will leave a scar usually around the nipple. If larger amounts of tissue and skin need to be removed, more obvious scars will result. Gynaecomastia can develop at any age and can be the result of weight gain, drug usage (such as steroids or marijuana), liver disease, and hormonal imbalance. ‘Man boobs’ can develop as a result of excessive weight gain and advancing age. Following the surgery the chest is often swollen and bruised, and an elastic pressure garment may be worn for one or two weeks to help reduce swelling. It usually takes some six weeks before you can return to normal activities.
Potential Risk of Negligence:There are general risks associated with surgery and a general anaesthetic including a small risk of chest infection particularly if you smoke, and also a small risk of thrombosis in the leg veins. Early complications, although rare include bleeding and the development of a haematoma. The treatment involves further anaesthetic to drain the blood and stop further bleeding. Infection is another rare complication and can cause part of the wound to break down, prolonging the healing process and worsening the quality of the final scars. Inadequate removal of breast tissue, an uneven contour to the chest and reduced nipple sensation are other rare complications.
