Breast Uplift

Description: To restore empty, drooping breasts to a more youthful, firmer and fuller shape. The breasts are reshaped, uplifted and the nipples repositioned.

Potential Risk of Negligence: There are general risks associated with major surgery and a general anaesthetic including a small risk of chest infection particularly if you smoke, and also a small risk of thrombosis in the leg veins, particularly if you are taking the contraceptive pill. Early complications, although rare include bleeding into the breast tissue producing a swollen painful breast, and the development of a haematoma. The treatment involves further anaesthetic to drain the blood and stop further bleeding. Infection is another rare complication (usually from the dormant germs lying in the breast ducts) and can cause part of the wound to break down, prolonging the healing process and worsening the quality of the final scars.

Permanent and extensive scars are produced during this surgery, which initially may be red and lumpy, but which fades to your natural skin colour over several months. These scars may become more noticeable if you smoke. Rarely nipple and skin sensation may be reduced or even lost after surgery. Fat necrosis can occur when breast tissue and fat loose blood supply and the breasts become hard and lumpy. This can result in an oily discharge from the breast in the first few weeks following surgery. The lumpiness may take up to two years to soften. Recurrent droopiness may occur: glandular ‘drop out’ where the breast drops lower on the chest wall and the nipple remains high, and revision surgery can be performed if necessary. The breasts may be left asymmetrical, where the breasts differ in size, and it may not be possible to correct existing asymmetry.
