Chemical Peel
Description: To improve the texture, appearance and smoothness of superficial skin due to the effects of ageing, smoking and sun exposure. Uneven pigmentation, acne and acne scarring can also be reduced. The aim of ‘peeling’ agents is to remove dead skin cells and release new cell growth. There are a variety of peeling agents, varying in strength from gentle, medium to deep peels.
Gentle or superficial peels contain mildly acidic agents known as alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) or betahydroxy acids (BHAs). They remove skin from the top layer of the skin (the epidermis), making skin feel tighter and smoother and help to reduce fine surface wrinkles. They have a mild and temporary effect.
Medium peels usually contain trichloroacetic acid (TCA). These remove the deeper layer of skin (the dermis), and help to improve and soften wrinkles and remove brown 'sun spots'.
Deeper peels are performed using phenol (a strong form of TCA) and go deeper into the lower dermis. They are only preformed by a surgeon or dermatologist with the appropriate skills and experience and often require an anaesthetist to administer local anaesthesia and/or sedation as they are very painful. The effects are long lasting and often a ‘one-off’ treatment unlike the gentle or medium peels.
Potential Risk of Negligence: The risks include infection; or an outbreak of cold sores; skin colour changes ‘Hypopigmentation’ (permanent lighter or paler skin colour) and scarring. The skin may appear darker, reddened or be tight or swollen for a time. Exposure to the sun should be avoided and in some cases further sun exposure is unwise due to the fact that the skin has lost its ability to tan. In rare cases hypopigmentation and scarring can be visible, permanent and irreversible. If you have fair skin there is much less risk of scarring due to reduced skin pigments, and some surgeons will only treat those with fair skin.
