Dermabrasion
Description: To change the appearance, tone and texture of the skin to minimise scars and reduce sun damage. This technique should only be performed by a surgeon or dermatologist with the appropriate skills and experience. A brush or dermatome is used to mechanically remove the outer layer of skin. Results can vary and are similar to that of a medium chemical peel.
Potential Risk of Negligence: The treatment generally causes a lot of bleeding and this can make it difficult to judge when to stop removing the skin. This can cause scarring or pigment changes. Whilst healing can take 10 days or more, some redness can persist for up to three months. Dermabrasion is not suitable if you have a history of cold sores or herpes, a tendency to form bad scars, or are not prepared to avoid sun exposure.
