Facelift
Description: To reverse the effects of ageing in the neck and lower part of the face, by reducing: lax or loose neck tissue, ‘jowls’ that have developed along the jawline, and deepened lines or folds of skin from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. A facelift will not improve the eye or forehead region, or the lines and wrinkles around the lips and chin. Additional procedures will be necessary to improve these areas.
Potential Risk of Negligence: There are general risks associated with surgery. The commonest complication is bleeding. Although rare, it occurs in approximately 2-3% of cases: usually developing in the first 12 hours post surgery and presents as a swelling on the side of the face. This will usually result in a return to theatre to stop the bleeding and remove the blood clot. If left untreated healing and recovery can be affected. Certain risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, men, and medication including aspirin, ibuprofen and other blood thinning agents.
Risks also include nerve damage, which is extremely rare. Both the greater auricular and the facial nerve can be affected. The former can lead to pain around the ear which is difficult to treat, and the latter depending on how aggressive the technique should recover quickly. There is always some temporary loss of sensation in the face and cheeks after surgery, but this usually recovers within a few months.
Delayed healing and infection are rare and minor wound healing delays normally resolve in a few weeks.
Symmetry can be affected and the features may not line up symmetrically.
