Female Genital Reshaping
Description: To obtain a more aesthetic appearance of the genitalia without adding unsightly scars or distorting normal anatomy. The inner labia (labia minora) are perceived to be too large and ugly, and you can have difficulty with hygiene, or feel uncomfortable when wearing tight clothing or have difficulty with penetration.
Potential Risk of Negligence: There are general risks associated with surgery and a general anaesthetic including a small risk of chest infection particularly if you smoke, and also a small risk of thrombosis in the leg veins, and also the lungs particularly if you are taking the contraceptive pill. Complications are uncommon with this procedure but can include: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, poor wound healing, under or over correction and the need for revision surgery. Aggressive resection may cause nerve damage with subsequent formation of painful neuromas and a loss of sensation. Although rare, tissue necrosis can occur. Careful placement of the scar is important as scar contracture along the rim of the labia (scalloping) can occur. The excellent blood supply to the labia ensures rapid wound healing. However the genital area will be swollen and painful and it is unlikely you will be able to have sex for at least 4 weeks, and you should avoid wearing tampons or tight clothing until healing has taken place.
