Liposuction
Description: To improve body shape and contours by removing specific areas of fat that are resistant to a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise. Liposuction is not an operation for losing weight, or for the treatment of obesity, and may leave loose skin. An extra procedure to remove loose skin may be required either at the time or following surgery. Dimples and wrinkles, also known as cellulite, will not be improved with liposuction. Excellent areas for treatment with liposuction include: the abdomen, flanks ('love handles'), hips and thighs, inner knees, chin and back of the neck. Difficult areas include the calves, back, arms and face. The growth of a benign fat tumour (lipoma) or fatty swellings under a man's nipples (gynaemastia) can also be removed using liposuction.
Potential Risk of Negligence: There are general risks associated with surgery and a general anaesthetic including a small risk of chest infection particularly if you smoke, and also a small risk of thrombosis in the leg veins, and also the lungs particularly if you are taking the contraceptive pill. Specific complications of liposuction include: bleeding, infection, scars, contour irregularities, lumpiness, extra skin looseness and fat necrosis. Serious infections are rare, but there is sometimes inflammation in the areas that have been treated, with sometimes oozing from the incisions. This normally settles with a course of antibiotics. Thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins) can occur in the area inside the knees and inner part of the thigh where these areas have been treated. This gradually settles after a few weeks. Removing too much fat (several litres) may result in dangerous imbalances in the body’s fluids. Also if a very large area of fat is removed from an area the skin in this area may be loose.
You should expect heavy bruising, particularly if you have been taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs. The bruising can last up to a month. Swelling and numbness of the treated skin can last up to six months.
