The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons - BAAPS - surgical figures for 2009
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) published the following figures of the numbers of aesthetic plastic surgery procedures performed in the UK in 2009
36,482 surgical procedures were carried out by BAAPS members in 2009. This is a 6.7% increase from 2008, when 34,187 were performed
32,859 procedures were carried out on women. This is a 5.0% increase from 2008 when 31,183 were performed
3,623 procedures were carried out on men. This is a huge 21% rise from 2008 when 3,004 were performed
Breast augmentation (‘boob jobs’) remains the most popular procedure with 8,565 performed this year, a 1% increase from 2008
Male breast reduction or gynaecomastia ops (‘man boobs’) rose from 323 to 581, an 80% increase and is now the most popular procedure for men
Breast reduction surgery in women rose from 3522 to 4122, a 17% increase
Male brow lifts rose from 72 to 109, a 51% increase,
Male facelifts also rose by 23% and male tummy tucks by 20%
Rhinoplasty (or ‘nose jobs’) increased by 25% overall,
Facelifts for women fell by 8%, but brow lifts, eyelid surgery and nose jobs have all increased
Most popular procedures for women:
Breast augmentation: 8,537 – up 1% from last year
Blepharoplasty (eyelids): 4,827 – up 7%
Breast Reduction: 4,122 – up 17%
Face/Neck Lift: 4,005 – down 8%
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): 3,268 – down 7%
Most popular procedures for men:
Rhinoplasty: 877 – up 26% from last year
Blepharoplasty (eyelids): 616 – up 1%
Breast Reduction: 581 – up 80%
Otoplasty (ear correction): 542 – up 7%
Liposuction: 499 – up 4%
These figures appear to suggest that despite the recession large numbers of both men and women are spending money on surgical rejuvenation treatments. It is therefore even more important that you ensure your surgeon:
- holds an appropriate qualification in plastic surgery which is registered with the GMC;
- is a registered member of BAAPS;
- either holds, or has held, or is qualified to hold, a substantive consultant post in plastic surgery in the NHS.
